Can you (and should you) weave Substack into your business eco-system? 8 Creative Ideas

Can you use Substack as a business owner? Absolutely. Since April 2022, I’ve been writing on Substack and it’s become the heart of my creative and entrepreneurial work. From growing my mailing list to 16,000+ subscribers to landing incredible opportunities, Substack has given me connection, creativity, and visibility. In this post, I’ll share what I love about it and the many ways you can use Substack as a service-based business owner.

I've been writing on Substack since April 2022. Here are all the things I love about it...

  • The connection with my writerly and entrepreneurial colleagues

  • The creativity

  • The attention span our readers have

  • The ease of publishing and the user interface

  • Being able to be social on Notes

  • The fact it's grown my mailing list to over 16k people and brought me a tonne of wonderful work opportunities.

Here are a few models you could utilise with Substack and your Business as a service provider.

  1. Substack as social media - set your Substack publication up as a landing page (*) and use your writerly profile to interact in the comments of other people's posts and on Notes (the inbuilt social media)

  2. Host your podcast (for free) from Substack - you can pull it through automatically to Spotify and Apple so it's a great option for those starting out with a podcast and looking to start an 'online home' with community around it.

  3. Host a blog on a side quest topic on Substack. Yes your website blog is great for SEO but if you want to explore something new and build and test an audience as an experiment, it works so well for that.

  4. Use it to host a pop up summit or similar - I've used it for summits and pop up challenges really well. (*)

  5. Use it for discoverability and set up a zap (*) to your main mailing list.

  6. Use it as a reader.

  7. Go live and chat to the people who turn up.

  8. Use their inbuilt audio recorder to read your work and deepen your connection with your audience.

Landing page = a page your customers/ clients land on to pop their email into. Usually leads to a 'lead magnet' digital gift - a class, audio or PDF workbook or similar.
