Readers can access free content, or choose to become a paid subscriber to access content that is put behind a paywall (where only paid subscribers can see it).
Substack gets paid by taking a percentage of paid subscriptions.

There are lots of factors here. Price point, subscriber numbers. Substack is a long game so hold that and know you can get there. Substack stats suggest anywhere between 1% - 10% of subscribers convert to paid so you can use that as a start point to work out your sums.
