One of the most common questions I hear is:
"How many subscribers do I need to make £1,000 or USD $1000 a month on Substack?"
The answer might surprise you.
Most people assume they need tens of thousands of subscribers before they can earn meaningful income. In reality, the number is often much lower.
Let's do the maths together?
The Short Answer
If your paid subscription costs around £8 per month, you'll need approximately:
125 paying subscribers to generate £1,000 per month.
That's it.
Not 10,000 subscribers. Not 50,000 subscribers.
Just 125 people willing to pay for your work. Of course, the real question is:
How many free subscribers do you need to get 125 paid subscribers?
That's where things get more interesting.
Understanding Conversion Rates
Most Substack publications convert somewhere between 2% and 10% of free subscribers into paid subscribers.
Let's look at some examples.
If 2% of your subscribers become paid
To get 125 paying subscribers, you'd need:
6,250 free subscribers
If 5% of your subscribers become paid
To get 125 paying subscribers, you'd need:
2,500 free subscribers
If 10% of your subscribers become paid
To get 125 paying subscribers, you'd need:
1,250 free subscribers
The difference is huge. Which means your success isn't determined solely by audience size.
It's determined by the relationship you build with your readers.
Why Bigger Isn't Always Better
One of the biggest myths in the creator economy is that you need a massive audience to make money.
You don't.
A publication with:
1,500 highly engaged subscribers
can often outperform one with:
15,000 disengaged subscribers
The creators earning sustainable income are rarely focused only on growth.
They're focused on trust - trust creates engagement - engagement creates conversions and conversions create revenue.
What Actually Increases Paid Conversions?
After working with Substack creators, writers, artists, female founders I've noticed the same patterns again and again.
The publications that convert well tend to have:
A Clear Promise
Readers know exactly why they're subscribing.
They understand what they'll receive and why it matters.
A Consistent Publishing Rhythm
Trust grows through consistency.
People are more likely to pay when they know you'll continue showing up.
A Distinct Point of View
Information is everywhere.
Perspective is rare. This means readers often pay because of how you think, not just what you know!
Community
Many successful publications aren't simply newsletters.
They're communities.
People stay because they feel connected to the writer and the other readers.
What About Making £2,000, £5,000 or £10,000 a Month?
The same principles apply.
At £8 per month:
£1,000/month = 125 paid subscribers
£2,000/month = 250 paid subscribers
£5,000/month = 625 paid subscribers
£10,000/month = 1,250 paid subscribers
When you break the numbers down like this, substantial income starts to feel much more achievable.
My Advice
Don't start by chasing 10,000 subscribers.
Start by asking:
"How can I create something valuable enough that 10 people would happily pay for it?"
Then 25.
Then 50.
Then 100.
The creators who build sustainable businesses on Substack are often the ones who focus on depth before scale. People want to share their work with their friends and colleagues...
A thousand true readers who trust your work can be worth far more than a hundred thousand casual followers scrolling past your content.
The goal isn't simply to get more subscribers, it's to build a publication people would genuinely miss if it disappeared.
That's where sustainable Substack income begins.
