Top tips for affiliate income for writers, creatives and entrepreneurs by Claire Venus

What IS affiliate income? Oo I can answer that - It's surprise money you get from recommend things you love!

I LOVE surprises like actually love them - I always have - it's only just dawned on me that I love running a business because I also love surprises - I know not everyone does and maybe that's why entrepreneurship doesn't suit everyone?

Those lovely email or comment replies, making sales in the middle of the night, new paid subs on Substack. Such nice surprises.

I have to laugh at all the girl math memes online - honestly I used to carry SO much shame about being bad at maths. Now I use google sheets ☺️

I LOVE how many tools we have to make running our businesses easier.

As you might have heard?

I'm hosting an Easy Affiliate Income Class on Monday.

Yesterday I got approved to be an affiliate for a WONDERFUL piece of tech I've just started using - will share more soon. I LOVED the surprise email of course - thanks Olly!

Ok to affiliate income there - Let’s imagine this.

You recommend a tool you already use.

Someone buys it.

You get USD - $60. (This literally happened to me yesterday - receipt at the bottom...

Now according to normal maths, that’s USD $60/ £44 (if you're in the UK)

But according to girl math, it’s $60 for FREE.

Because;

  • You were going to recommend it anyway.

  • You were already talking about it to your friends.

  • You were already using it in your business.

So technically… the $60 came from a conversation you were already having.

Which means it’s basically surprise money! (My fave part). 💝

And surprise money is the best kind of money.

Also, girl math says:

  • If 5 people buy = $300 - a lovely dinner!!

  • 10 people buy = $600 - a weekend away with your bestie!

And the best part?

You’re not selling random plastic things or lining Jeff Bezos pocket.

You’re saying:

“Here’s a thing that genuinely helped me that can help you too.”

Which us creatives have been doing forever.

  • Books we love.

  • Notebooks we love. (Yes I've applied to Papier this year)

  • Apps we love.

  • Courses we love.

Affiliate links are just a tiny system that says:

“Thank you for the recommendation.”

Honestly, the internet runs on recommendations anyway. We might as well let them buy us dinner and add to our kids bank accounts?

On that note - my son showed me his journal last night and the number one place he wants to visit is Disneyland (the quote I got last year for the four of us was £6k) so I'm challenging myself this year to double my affiliate income to get us all there by Christmas - I know as he grows up it will be less important - (I made £3000 in aff income last year so I think it is possible)

💝

If you’re curious about how creatives are adding affiliate income into their ecosystem (without turning into a walking advert) and why so many like me do it, you can get a spot on my class on Monday.

Because girl math is telling me something SUPER important. If the internet is already recommending things…we might as well get paid for the good ones!!

And honestly - I think my Grandma would be proud - she loved playing 'The Pools' - I think it's a similar thing - it's in the bloodline 🤣

Affiliates Way back when...

You know when we kept seeing #aff and #ad - I wasn't clear on the difference... people talked about earning a 'small amount' and mostly it was product based?

Affiliates on services are a little different with most service providers paying between 20% and 50% of the unit cost to their affiliates - some with recurring payments too.

I signed up for my first piece of affiliate income in 2021. It was via a service provider that I'd learnt from for two years. I loved and trusted this person's teaching and I knew my audience would resonate.

I didn't really expect anything to happen BUT I got multiple emails that people had bought the programme with my affiliate link - I was earning 50% of the income for that $99 programme each year for as long as they stayed - YES year after year!

So my affiliate income was a recurring payment. So cool!

After that I was HOOKED. Even with a small audience, I knew I could be of service and so I often looked for affiliate links on products and services I used. I learnt everything I could about how to be a good affiliate too.

I did so well that I won first place in a competition and won a 1-2-1 with my mentor and some extra dollars too!

Top tips to encourage folks to use your links;

  • Give a lot of context - how long have you been using the thing, how has it impacted your life/ your business/ you as a person - why this thing/ this person/ this product.

  • Tell people it's an affiliate link ("aff link" in the footer is enough)

  • Make sure you've got the right link... usually there's a place to track them inside a portal.

  • If you get the emails to say the name of the person who has bought something, drop them a thank you.

  • It's a beautiful relationship and thing they've done - ask them if they've enjoyed it? Use that testimonial next time.
